Emergency Tips

Here are some useful tips for planning

ahead before you have an Emergency.

Water Leaks

  • If you discover a Leak in your plumbing, the very first thing to do is locate and shut off the Water Supply before calling a plumber.

  • While this may seem like a common sense thing to do, many people don't know where their Water Shut Off Valve is. You may want to locate your Main Water Shut Off Valve before an emergency. Larger properties may have multiple shut off valves, so look for more than one.

  • Then notify all family members or tenants of the location, and demonstrate how to turn it off. Consider having them each do it as well, so they know what to do during an emergency.

Fuel Oil Leaks

  • If you discover a leak in your Fuel Oil system, locate and shut off the fuel supply before calling a plumber.

  • While this may seem like a common sense thing to do, many people don't know where their Fuel Oil Shut Off Valve is.

  • You may want to determine where the Fuel Oil Shut Off Valve is on your property before an emergency (it's usually located on the big Fuel Oil Tank).

  • Then notify all family members of the location, and demonstrate how to turn it off. Consider having them each do it as well, so they know what to do during an emergency.

Propane Leaks

  • If you discover a leak in your Propane system:

  • Extinguish all sources of ignition (cigarettes, open flames, etc.).

  • Do NOT turn off lights or appliances/equipment in the leak area!

  • Shut Off the propane supply valve at the tank.

  • Leave the affected area straight away!

  • Call 911 from a neighbors, or Cell Phone.

  • Wait for Emergency responders, do NOT reenter the area until declared safe by the authorities.

  • Many people don't know where their propane shut off valve is. You may want to locate your propane tank before an emergency to determine how to shut the valve off.

  • Then notify all family or tenants of the location, and demonstrate how to turn it off. Consider having them each do it as well, so they know what to do during an emergency.

Electrical Sparks and Arcs

If you notice Electrical Sparks and Arcs from any of your built-in Electric Appliances such as your Heater, Water Heater, Boiler, Air Circulation Fans (or any other Electrical Appliance), the first thing to do is locate and shut off the Electrical Circuit Breaker before calling a Plumber (or Electrician, if the problem isn't related to your heating system).

While this may seem like a common sense thing to do, many people don't know where their Electrical Circuit Breakers are. You may want to locate the Electrical Circuit Breaker Box before an emergency. It may be inside or outside of the structure, and there may be more than one, in the case of garages or other outbuildings on the property, so check throughly.

Then notify all family members of the location, and demonstrate how to turn them off. Consider having them individually do it as well, so they know what to do during an emergency.
